Church History

E-mail Print PDF

Established in 1960 - our first Parish Priest was Fr Lenary who served us from 1960 to 1971. Our Parish boundaries are: The sea in the east encompassing the suburbs of Virgina and La Lucia; Margaret Maytom Drive in Durban North in the South, and the municipal borders of Umhlanga to the North/North West. Our Western boundaries encompass the suburbs of Glen Hills, Glen Anil and Sunningdale.

Fr Lenary OMI built what was originally a community centre / hall which was completed in 1966.

Fr Theo Carrington OMI took over from Fr Lenary in 1971 and turned the hall into the Blessed Sacrament Church by extending the back of the hall. Fr Carrington served our community until 1998 when at the age of 93 he retired. He died soon afterwards in 1999 and is buried in the OMI cemetery at Cedara near Pietermatitzburg in Kwa Zulu Natal. We were privileged to have Fr Roland Faley OFM from the USA serve our community as temporary Parish Priest from the time of Fr Carrington's retirement in 1999 until August 2000.

During this time in this Parish, Fr Carrington was responsible for building the Catechetical Centre at Umhlanga Rocks and subsequently the Star of the Sea Church on the same site. He also added the proper Priest's flat to the Blessed Sacrament Church and a hall.

Year 2002
Formal plans for the new church at Virginia began.

Year 2004

We haveĀ 4 masses over a weekend - three at Blessed Sacrament Church andĀ one at Star of the Sea. Mass is celerbrated every day of the week and Confessions heard on a Saturday afternoon. We have an extremely full program of activities - more information about which can be found by visiting any of our link pages.
