Society of St Vincent de Paul
OUR MISSION
The society of St Vincent de Paul is a lay Catholic organization that aspires to live the Gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.
Vincentians know that when they come to the aid of poor friends and neighbours, they are serving Jesus, their friend and neighbour. This is the core of Vincentian Spirituality. The Conference serves the poor on behalf of the entire parish community.

The Society was formed in Paris, France on the 23rd April 1833 by a group of young law students lead by BI Frederick Ozanam. They realised there was a great need to help the many poor people in Paris and set the wheels in motion to form an organization that led to the establishment of the Society which has now grown to an estimated 800,000 members in 140 countries. The Society started in South Africa in 1856 in Cape Town and there are presently about 2,500 members at 250 conferences.

The Society operates through "conferences" at individual parish level, up to Central Councils, to National Councils and ultimately to the World Council. Conferences elect a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer and are guided by THE RULE OF THE SOCIETY, the details of which are contained in a booklet issued to all members.

The Society relies entirely on donations from parishioners to enable us to operate the many projects listed below plus the monthly collection on the first Sunday of each month. All work is done by volunteers.

The Society is a registered Public Benefit Organization NPO 003-193. Funds donated to the Society are tax deductible. A SARS approved Section 18a receipt is provided on request.
